Founder's Day/World Record Attempt
9/4/2010

As part of its annual Founder's Day event on Saturday, September 4, the Frazier International History Museum is swabbing the decks in preparation for what they hope to be the world’s largest gathering of pirates. The museum encourages scallywags of all ages, shapes, colors and sizes to join them in claiming the Guinness World Record for the city of Louisville! Aaarrrgghh!

Everyone is welcome to this FREE, fun-for-all-ages street carnival, which also includes food, games, inflatables, live music by the Louisville Leopard Percussionists Steel Leopards, educational crafts and exciting live shows by costumed performers. Museum admission is also free, including the temporary exhibit, "Pirates: Treasure & Treachery." The Museum Store will be hosting a BIG SALE on Founder's Day, with everything in the store 20% off, 25% off for members.

Founder’s Day is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pirate registration for the record attempt takes place until 11:30 a.m., with the record attempt immediately following from 11:35 to 11:50 a.m.

The current record is 2,646 held by the Northern California Pirate Festival. You must be outfitted in the required pirate dress code in order to qualify. Pirates of all ages are allowed, so kids are welcome to participate.

According to official Guinness guidelines, costumes must consist of the following:

  • Pirate-style hat or bandana/kerchief
  • Eye patch
  • An accessory: Sword (fake ones recommended), hook, musket, skull and crossbones flag or parrot
  • Appropriate shirt: Striped shirt, white shirt or shirt
  • Appropriate trousers: Pantaloons, tatty trousers or rolled up trousers

Participants must:

  • Be gathered for a full 15 minutes in the designated area

This family-friendly event is a great conclusion to the summer, and one you will not want to miss! Founder's Day is sponsored by the fine lads and lasses at Brown-Forman.
